Glenlola Collegiate School was formed in 1957 as a result of the amalgamation of Bangor Collegiate School and Glenlola School. It is a controlled grammar school for girls aged 11 - 18 years with an integral Preparatory Department, Cygnet House.
The School is responsible, through the Board of Governors to the South Eastern Education and Library Board.
AIM OF THE SCHOOL
Glenlola Collegiate aims to encourage in its girls the acquisition of Knowledge and the Skills and Wisdom to use it in appropriate ways and at appropriate times; and to assist them in the development of a sense of achievement and a respect for themselves and others.
The School will maintain good discipline which is essential to every aspect of school life and, at the same time, provide a guidance system that will cater for the needs of each girl.
DISCIPLINE
Discipline should be maintained, as far as is possible, with the minimum of tension. Responsibility for maintaining good standards lies with each member of staff. Teachers are expected to correct inappropriate behaviour or breaches of regulations wherever they occur and not just in their own classrooms. Without the active interest and participation of every member of staff it is impossible to achieve the desired results.
GUIDANCE
Guidance is the umbrella term for all those facets of school life (including discipline) which are specifically designed to help our girls to mature and take responsibility for their own lives. Guidance is personal, educational and vocational in nature and all of these aspects merge into one another. It is the aim of our Guidance Programme to promote the implementation of the educational principles established in the Education Reform Order 1989 and in particular the whole curriculum of Glenlola Collegiate School.
Our Guidance Programme is designed to achieve the following:-
- To promote the personal and social development of all pupils and to foster positive attitudes. This will be achieved through the quality of teaching and learning; through the nature of relationships among pupils, teachers and other adults; through arrangements for monitoring academic, personal, social and vocational progress; through specific pastoral structures and support systems; through extra-curricular activities and a caring school ethos.
- To articulate the values of Glenlola Collegiate School, to involve all teachers and to help pupils achieve success. In this context it offers support for the learning behaviour and welfare of all pupils, and addresses the particular difficulties which some girls experience. It is hoped that all girls will benefit from the full range of educational opportunities available in Glenlola Collegiate School.
