The key idea of the YELLOW Club is to make pupils aware of their environment and aware of the need to help protect it. So far this year we have been kept busy trying to promote the environment both within the school, and the wider community.

Way back in October 2008, members of the YELLOW Club entered a project into the Eco-UNESCO Young Environmentalists Competition. The competition was looking for schools and youth groups, from all over Ireland to get involved with the environment.
The YELLOW Club created a project based on the mobile phone recycling initiative that they run in school, through the house system. It has been 3 years since the YELLOW Club established this recycling initiative and, in that time, we have raised over £2200 for charity.
The YELLOW Club’s project was short-listed for the Eco-UNESCO awards in Dublin and 7 members, along with Mrs Sinnerton, attended the awards ceremony on Wednesday 20 May 2009. The girls put a lot of effort into their project and with the help of Miss Hunter (who created the most fantastic mobile phone poster) and Mr Dorman (who helped with the PowerPoint) they produced a wonderful display for the awards ceremony.
The ceremony was held at the Mansion House’s Round Room, on Dawson Street. With over 50 schools and youth groups from all over Ireland, the YELLOW Club did a wonderful job of representing Glenlola Collegiate’s efforts of sustainability. Although their project didn’t win a prize, it was highly commended. The club members plan to enhance their project next year and gather the support of local schools.

Spreading the word
This year, members of the YELLOW Club wanted to get other schools involved and wrote to local school principals to see if they would be interested in establishing a similar competition in their own school. Members created a short video that could be used in school assemblies to promote the competition and also produced posters and support material to help other schools get established.
If your school would be interested, please contact Mrs Sinnerton on 028 91475340 for more details on how you can get started.
